The Castle

The Estate
Sir David Hunter Blair was an enthusiastic and successful amateur landscape architect. In 1803 he commissioned a professional, Thomas White, to draw up a plan for “improving” the park at Blairquhan. But, in the end, he followed his own ideas.
The Long Approach
The 3 mile approach to the Castle along the River Girvan is, perhaps, his best achievement. The entrance is by a William Burn bridge and lodge.
The drive then enters a narrower gorge of the river. There are waterfalls at Tranew Linn and at the Linn. Then on the left, after about 2 miles, the Castle comes into view. Behind is Craigengower, on the summit of which is a monument to the memory of Colonel James Hunter Blair MP, the eldest son of Sir David. He was killed at the battle of Inkerman in 1854.
Finally, the castle is reached through an avenue of limes, planted in the early 18th Century.
